THE METHOD

“99% Practice 1% Theory” Sri Pattabhi Jois

Ashtanga Yoga ~ Mysore Style

You take practice, You think God!
— Sri K Pattabhi Jois

The modern teachings of this Ashtanga Yoga Practice come from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (Guruji) who lived in Mysore, South India. Thus, the name given to this particular method used to facilitate transformation is derived from the city where he transmitted these teachings to his students - "Mysore".

Mysore Style is the heart of Ashtanga Yoga.

Pattabhi Jois was known for teaching students according to their individual abilities and personality. His approach would differ with each person based on age, physical and mental condition, and overall aptitude or needs. He also appeared to assess students on an energetic level, and would directly give what was needed for one's personal growth.

In the Mysore method, students are met as individuals. Each person is taught progressively according to his or her readiness. A relationship is cultivated with the teacher. The practice begins to grow...

As in many things, more is not necessarily better or helpful.

With each successive practice, a student begins to develop mastery in conjoining the breath with the asanas (postures) and the drishti (gazing points) in the sequence. When a teacher feels that a student is ready to advance further in his or her personal practice, new teachings are given.

The student-teacher relationship is central to this approach.

The Mysore method of teaching and practice is very effective, and Guruji's power continues to be transmitted through his students who received his blessing to teach.

WHO WE ARE

Russell Case

Russell has been practicing and teaching Ashtanga yoga for more than 25 years. A humble and refined teacher, he was given Authorization by Sri K Pattabhi Jois in 2005. Case is known for his joking spirit, and his perpetual eye toward social justice work. When Pattabhi Jois invited him to his pranayama class in 2007, he considered this distinction to be the highest grade.

Russell has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga in the Mysore Method since 2001. He has taught programs in NYC, Brighton - England, Taipei - Taiwan, San Francisco, and was Director of the Ashtanga Yoga Mysore program at Stanford University for nine years.

He worked as the Director of Partnerships for the Pure Edge Foundation, a non-profit company that brings yoga-based exercises and mindfulness programs into schools throughout the USA. Russell is known for his creative delivery of experiential presentations on neuroscience for social and emotional learning.

Russell Case brings to life the teachings of yoga and mindfulness in a very colorful and scientific way that makes it easy for students to understand the deeper dimensions of why yoga works and how.

Harmony Slater

Harmony first journeyed to Mysore in 2004 to study with the Jois family. She first received Authorization to teach this method in 2006, directly from Sri. K Pattabhi Jois, and nine years later received Certification from Sharath Jois. She is one of only a few women in the world to hold this honor.

Harmony is a strong presence in the Ashtanga community worldwide. She founded two Yoga Schools in Canada, and in addition to her teaching, she has shared her experiences with the practice, pregnancy and childbirth in the books: Yoga Sadhana for Mothers and Strength and Grace: A collection of Essays by Women of Ashtanga Yoga. She has a wealth of knowledge to offer students, and openly shares her insights about experiencing the full integration of Ashtanga Yoga during her workshops.
